Winsford Area Guide

Living in Winsford

Originally a salt town, Winsford has sometimes been considered a poor relation to the more well-heeled Alderley Edge, Hale and Wilmslow.

Thanks to modern development and careful regeneration, Winsford has overcome this reputation and is now a desirable place to live. It enjoys a fabulous central location right at the heart of Cheshire, equidistant between Manchester and Liverpool.

Winsford is known for a real sense of community with warm and friendly residents who often choose to remain in the town for life.

Exploring and Exercise

Winsford is a wonderful place to explore - a multitude of cycle tracks and hiking routes criss-cross the surrounding area and the town itself. Unlike many of its neighbours, Winsford has very little traffic and an abundance of green spaces where residents keep fit or play for the local football team. Walkers have Whitegate Way, The River Weaver and Delamere Forest, and golf and tennis can be found at Knight’s Grange.

Development

Winsford now boasts some really attractive properties, particularly in more well-established neighbourhoods. It has been transformed by the development of the town centre, including the brand new Winsford campus of Mid Cheshire College. Winsford Lifestyle Centre, a contemporary and well-equipped entertainment complex, features a theatre, swimming pool and sauna and the popular Drumber development, just on the edge of the town, also offers plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes.

Working and Learning

Winsford is also becoming a thriving centre for employment. Both the Cheshire Fire Service and the Cheshire Police have moved their headquarters to Winsford in recent years. Schools such as  Winsford High Street Primary School, Winsford Academy, Willow Wood Primary, Wharton Primary and Darnhall Primary School all benefit from good reputations.

Location

Winsford is situated just a short drive from Northwich, Middlewich, Nantwich and Chester, and many of Cheshire’s most popular attractions are within easy reach. Winsford is also ideal for commuting to large business hubs such as Crewe, Liverpool, Manchester, Stoke-On-Trent, Birmingham and Chester. The most sought after areas in the town include Darnhall, Whitegate, Swanlow, Knights Grange and Middlewich.

Local Legend

The magnificent St Chad’s Church dates back to 1307 and is steeped in folklore. Local legend states that the church was originally built in Over Square but Satan, furious that the people loved their church so much, plucked it from the ground and flew away with it. When the monks at nearby Vale Royal Abbey saw the church flying by they rang the bells in warning and the devil dropped the church into its present location.

Shopping and eating

Winsford has extensive free parking in and around its shopping centres. Winsford Cross Shopping Centre is open seven days a week and is home to a range of large chain stores. There is also a selection of pubs, restaurants and bars in the area with The Hayhurst Arms, Fishpool Inn and Nu Flava being some of the locals’ favourites, while some amazing architecture can be enjoyed at The Ark Inn.

Rural areas

The areas surrounding Winsford such as Darnhall, Wettenhall, Bostock Green, Little Budworth and Whitegate are more rural. They afford a countryside feel, boasting spectacular views and beautiful walks only a short stroll from the town centre itself. At the heart of Winsford are The Flashes - a series of three lakes along the banks of the River Weaver.  Known locally as The Cheshire Broads, they attract diverse wildlife species.
